Description
Shadowed lines trace the bare foot as it touches a battered stone step—each toe precisely outlined, nails hinted at by careful shading. Deep cracks and uneven surfaces scatter across the stone, their irregular marks suggesting years of wear. Just beneath, the stone and water connect abruptly, the churning surface below built from a field of overlapping ink lines and restless foamy shapes. Each wave varies in size, their kinetic forms nearly filling every open space along the hem of the illustration.
The wrapping garment clings to one leg, its motion defined by deliberate folds and bands of cross-hatching. In bold blackletter beneath the scene, the words “A STEP BELOW THE TIDE” command attention, the sharply ornamented capitals arranged in measured spacing and finished with diamond dots and paired marks.
