The oval badge is realized with a textured navy ground and a mustard-gold border ring that shows scattered signs of wear, the kind you only pick up on close examination. Cream block letters curve around the top, spelling out ‘Desert Night Observatory’, each one outlined with a fine black line that keeps the lettering crisp against the dark background. At the heart of the design is a detailed cream linework reflecting telescope, perched confidently on its tripod and drawn with fine crosshatching for depth and shade. The telescope points skyward amid a spread of starry dots, a luminous four-pointed star, and a pale moon just above bands of flat-topped mesas and cream desert shrub silhouettes.
There are two gold stars to either side of the telescope with tiny dots underneath. The illustration’s base is wrapped by a folded mustard-gold banner: ‘Study the Distant Light’ is set in navy block serif capitals, giving the phrase a thoughtful weight.
