Description
One spiral of blue ribbon winds around the figure’s arm, disappearing just beneath the small bird she cradles. It falls back into the tangle of shaded leaves below, gliding along a section of her gown. The grayscale and sepia drawing is both dense and precise, with each cluster of foliage given a different edge and weight.
Lettering in heavy, sculptural type rises above her head, the phrase ‘HELD THROUGH MERCY NOT MERIT’ shaded so each tall vertical is deeply etched against the light interior. The dark, blocky plaque anchoring the image at the bottom offers ‘STUDY 026’ in stacked white type, corners marked by curling filigree.
The art uses vivid blue for all the ribbons, in contrast to the overall muted finish. The effect is especially clear at the edges, where contours stay sharp, even where type and ribbon overlap foliage. On this unisex jersey tank, the print’s tight composition keeps negative space to a minimum.
