Design story & product details
Empty space surrounds the lettering, leaving no border, emblem, or second line to interrupt its generous breathing room. The bare area is part of the composition, making the ample space around the capital and apostrophe especially clear. The shallow arch rises through the middle, while the outer letters angle away from it.
À l’abri, French for sheltered or under cover, appears in dark blue-purple on the Classic Dad Hat. Large serif forms end in broad slab-like finishes, while narrow white inset stripes follow the thick strokes in close parallel tracks. The stripes stay fine even as the curves turn.
The capital À is unusually constructed: an open triangular counter gives it a cut-out centre, and its separate wedge-shaped grave accent contains a fine white slit. Beside it, the enlarged apostrophe curls inward around a tapered white interior.
Rounded bowls shape the a and b before the r closes in a tight curl. The i is broken into a rounded dot and stem, with a small curved white cutout in the dot; spacing opens around the opening characters and tightens through the final lowercase letters.
