Design story & product details
Broad white intervals give the three illustrated groups room to remain distinct on the Heavyweight Unisex Crewneck T-shirt. At left, a moustached coffee merchant in a tall top hat holds a small cup, pale steam curling beside him. His striped three-piece suit is crossed at the lower jacket by the white script Coffee, whose looping capital and closely joined letters are edged in black.
The two right-hand emblems bring the botanical side of the design into view. Pointed veined leaves and round berries frame outlined COFFEE lettering; the exaggerated curve of its C continues under the word. Below, a shaded handled cup rests on an elliptical saucer amid more leaves and berries. Pale COFFEE CO. arches over it, with 1974 at the side, while 1927 appears beneath the merchant.
Fine hatching gathers in the suit, cup and foliage shadows, giving the black, grey and white illustration a worked, engraved character. The lettering alternates between a loose signwriter-like script and squared outlines. Coffee Merchant 1927 draws its period cues from those contrasting marks, with pale details held cleanly apart by the unmarked ground.
