Design story & product details
Speckled blackletter spells out “DECEMBER HAS THORNS” in ivory above a tangle of black stems that cut across the base. Each letter in the main phrase warps into sharp points and edges, with thin parallel lines tracing their insides and wear breaking up the fills. Some gaps between the lettering hold four-pointed stars and a small crescent, placed so that they press into the rhythm of the words.
The real wintry touch is in the branches crossing “THORNS”. They’re drawn with a sparse, diurnal kind of tangle—icicle-shaped snow clinging unevenly, dropping down from high spots, and red triangular thorns spiking out at improbable angles. Ovals of fruit cling below, stippled with ink, their black sepals stark against the lower snow. Along the bottom, thin, ornamented lines bracket the words “ROSE HIPS HOLD FAST”, the kind of phrase someone might remember after a walk in frozen bramble. This heavyweight men’s crewneck works especially well for those who like their winter symbols understated but present.
