Coral-red flames meet orange and pale yellow tongues, making a hot frame for the black cat and its small pink facial marks. White space opens around the sharp outer points, preventing the packed drawing from becoming a solid block.
The cat has half-closed white eyes beneath a black forehead, with pink triangular ears, fine brows, a tiny triangular nose and a curled mouth. Dark whiskers continue past its head onto the flames, while two neat U-shaped marks rest on its chest. Its raised right-side tail finishes in a soft rounded tip, an unexpectedly gentle counterpoint to the jagged fire.
On the Unisex Longsleeve T-shirt, the words I Am Very form a white curved line beneath the cat. Hungry arrives in much heavier coral-red letters, uneven in their edges and fused into the lower flames.
Very Hungry Cat turns its deadpan, sleepy expression into a compact animal-humour graphic. The narrow dark whiskers are easy to miss against the busy red edges, but they make the face feel unusually wide. Small detached flames at the upper sides give the blaze a broken, flickering outline.
