Heavy black letters with flared, swashy strokes follow the bends of a cream switchback road and spell out We count hairpins, not Kilometers. Beside them, a rider in navy and plum armor climbs past a stone marker for the Stelvio Climbing Society, 48 turns and 2757 m up the famous Alpine pass. The joke is one every climber knows: on a pass like this, nobody counts the distance, only the turns.
