Description
A broad gray field gives the Arirang artwork room to breathe, with its densest image gathered between a hanbok musician and a tall bordered panel. On this ceramic mug, the black, pale blue-gray, and white cutout of a player with a gayageum carries a crisp, posterized photographic treatment reduced to emphatic planes. A second gayageum enters diagonally from the upper left, echoing the instrument in the player’s hands. The lower-right area stays notably spare, so the image does not become an all-over collage.
Silvery brush lettering with rough grain and irregular edges gives the Korean words a hand-worked presence. The wording means Arirang, the recurring refrain of a Korean folk song, while the smaller lyric asks to be seen as one would look at a flower in the final winter month. Repeated forms of the refrain shift between fine outline and solid fill beside the panel. Two pale blue cursive lines soften the base, while monarch-style butterflies interrupt the strict graphic structure.
