A drop of pond water looks empty, and the joke is that it never is. Even This Drop Has a Social Life fills one drop with a crowd: trumpet-shaped cells on long stems, striped diatoms, a slipper-shaped paramecium and a chain of tiny disc cells. On this pullover hoodie, they are drawn like an old microscope plate in sage green and lavender.

The detail worth owning is the fringed rims of the trumpet cells, drawn hair by hair. Give it to a biology teacher who keeps a microscope on her desk.
