Description
The framed wall print presents a dense Korean-style Sipjangsaeng landscape, filled corner to corner with traditional symbols of longevity. A gnarled pine tree, with blue-green clustered needles and tan bark defined by dark cracks, extends from the upper left. Clustered blue-green peaks in the background ascend in overlapping silhouettes, with bands of pale cream and pink clouds winding between them. A red sun disk appears on the right near a flying crane, whose outstretched wings and red-crowned head are shown in careful brush lines. Two delicately spotted deer, with the smaller one antlered, stand on a rocky midground ledge, and at the bottom, swirling water carries two turtles resting on dark stones. Coral-red blossoming shrubs fill both lower corners. Traditional Korean characters, reading ‘Nokdu Valley,’ are inscribed vertically in the lower left along with a red seal stamp.
- The composition uses no empty margins, filling the entire surface edge to edge.
- Korean ‘녹두계곡’ means ‘Nokdu Valley’ in English and is placed in the bottom left.
- Bands of clouds are softly blended with muted cream and pink pigments above the mountains.
The crane’s fine black-and-white markings and the layering of the distant peaks offer detail not immediately apparent. Every motif signals wishes for a long life.
