Three small pitted holes mark the shoulder of the spire, just below a scatter of round barnacle bumps, and they are the sort of damage a real shell picks up from years on the seabed. From there the drawing opens out into a single large whelk, turned so its mouth faces you, with the pointed spire at upper left and the long canal tapering away to lower right. On this men’s oversized heavyweight crewneck t-shirt the shell runs on a diagonal, drawn in the manner of an old natural history engraving.
- The opening is a deep navy oval, ringed by curved strokes that pale step by step through slate blue to cream.
- Fine parallel hatching and stippling build the ribbed whorls of the spire, where the line work is at its densest.
- Sandy tan is laid in loose patches along the broad outer lip, whose edge ripples in soft scallops.
What holds the drawing together is the contrast between its two halves: the crowded, weathered spire on one side and the smooth, almost bare lip on the other, joined by a pale folded edge that curves like a ribbon down to the tip.
