Large monochrome capitals, sharply stepped at the sides, pronounce “LAPS ARE THE SHORT PART” in a dramatic arch along the upper part of the artwork. Below, two swimmers are viewed from behind as they pause at the pool’s edge. Their swim caps are solid and dark, with the swimmer on the right marked by two bold shoulder straps framing the back. Grayscale textures in the water and ripples surround them, lending a sense of movement even in this moment of rest.
Details in the pool environment add depth: the lane divider, with light and dark alternating discs, cuts diagonally across the frame and communicates the atmosphere of a real swim meet or practice. At the bottom, heavy black serif lettering is painted directly onto the rectangular pool tiles, noting “FOUR LANE SWIMMERS” and “FOUNDED 1987.”
