Design story & product details
The artwork presents a koi carp captured mid-leap, twisting in an S-shaped arc among restless waves. Its scales are detailed with layered arcs, shading from dark slate-blue along the back to warm coral and cream along the belly, each one individually outlined in fine ink. Pale orange-white fins extend from the body, delicate line work radiating from their bases; two slender barbels curve forward in pale strokes. The water is dynamic, built from blue-gray brushwork and crowned with white crests and small bubbles rising beside the fish.
Jagged rocks, shaded green-gray and edged with bolder black lines, anchor the corners at the lower edge. Above, slender willow branches crowd toward the fish, drawn with a muted, almost smoky palette; thin brown trunks give way to narrow, pointed leaves that nearly form a screen over the upper portion. The background, a plain aged tan, sets off the detail where the fish’s movement leaves space clear and unembellished.
In the upper left, a vertical column of bold black Korean characters reads as “Carp at Play beneath Willow,” which captures a sense of observation in motion, and a small red seal with reversed white script marks the artist. The artwork suits interiors where nature’s energy is valued, or as a thoughtful gift honoring new chapters and resilience.
