Description
Spiked, metal-inspired lettering spelling MYEONGNYANG runs across the upper chest in a jagged motif, detailed with thin black outlines and a cracked paint texture that breaks up the smoothness of the gold-cream fill. The word curves subtly, its sharp points overlapping a stylized emblem blending compass and rudder. Behind all of this, layers of smoky black clouds deepen the contrast and define the print’s boundaries, which show torn, uneven borders on the fabric rather than the usual rectangular edge.
The lower area transforms into a turbulent ocean vortex built from navy and white stippling, with every line and curve marking the flow of water. At the force of the spiral, a multi-tiered wooden warship appears engulfed by the storm, showing careful attention in the details of its dragon or demon figurehead and its array of flying cloth banners. Pieces of wreckage and snapped masts jam into the corners of the artwork and cluster against the swirling waters. The only word, MYEONGNYANG, is not English—it refers to a historic Korean naval battle, and its use here directly connects this paneled scene to that moment in Korean history.
