Description
The phrase ‘OPEN WATER’ and ‘FACE TO THE MORNING SKY’ arches along the upper curve of a dense navy badge, each word capped with a small four-pointed star between. Only one ink tone is used, letting the badge’s concentric rings and shaded lines play against the solid grey of the women’s crop tee.
At the heart of the composition, ‘FLOAT’ repeats three times in blocky, serif type—each letter made up of both visible hatching and more intricate cross-hatch patterns. The lettering is stacked so that each word connects and mingles with the next, visually anchoring the central subject. This effect is sharpest where parts of letters cut through the main illustration.
The central figure is a reclining woman on a long, rounded board. Her loose hair, subtle dotted texture on the suit, and relaxed hand break up the formality of the badge. The lines that define her surfboard-like float are clean but softened with stipple, keeping the focus on her shape without isolating it fully from the watery background.
Surrounding her, the field is filled with both flat and wavy lines to mimic water, which even out the negative space and keep most of the visual weight at the center. Only the perimeter is left opening up, pressed against the slender double ring.
