Design story & product details
A red-and-white checked curtain has slipped out of the caravan’s side window and hangs there, the one soft thing in a drawing made of rivets and sheet metal. The caravan itself is rounded like a bread loaf, cream on top and navy below with an orange-red band running through the door, and it rides tilted on three small wheels that have nothing under them. It is being towed. A jointed mechanical arm, with a red cable looped loosely around its elbows, climbs from the caravan roof to the tail nozzle of a finned rocket.
The rocket points up and away, cream-bodied with a long orange-red stripe, a matching nose cone and a dark navy bubble canopy. On this crewneck tee the two vehicles form a single slanted line, the rocket at the shoulder and the caravan down by the opposite hip, so the picture reads as something already under way. All the shading is done in fine stipple dots and thin navy line, which gives the metal the grain of an old paperback cover.
- The rocket has three swept fins, and only their inner faces are coloured orange-red.
- Rows of tiny rivets follow every panel seam on both the rocket and the caravan.
- The caravan carries a small roof vent, a rounded door with a handle and round red marker lights low on its side.
It suits anyone who likes old science fiction illustration, long road trips, or the idea of taking the holiday home along for the ride.
