Design story & product details
A thick ochre rope draws the outer boundary of Smooth Sea, looping free at either side into stylized curling waves. Within it, a bearded sailor in a dark cap faces forward with crossed tattooed forearms and a striped shirt. On the Heavyweight Unisex Crewneck T-shirt, his pipe reaches to the right beneath a plume of curling cream smoke, while dark green-black shadowing gives the cream areas a dense, etched finish.
Cream scrolls frame the sailor with the full line, “A Smooth Sea Never Made A Skilled Sailor.” The upper words rise into an arch before dropping away, while the lower words dip through the middle. A gold-toned anchor overlaps the rope at the base; behind the sailor’s shoulders, seabirds cross over sea and cliffs, with a pale sun and a small lighthouse near the horizon. The ship, bird, anchor, compass-like circle and wave tattoos make the crossed arms feel like their own maritime record.
- Fine hatch marks run through the cream banners and smoke.
- The rope breaks its circle to form loose loops beside the waves.
