Large serif block capitals in cream fill the top of the artwork, each letter pushed close, layered with heavy outlines, teal shadows, and fine dark hatching. The phrase—that was not a wave—has a dense, tangible feel thanks to the use of deep contrasting colour and intricately lined faces.
Obliquely through the centre, a humpback whale bursts upward, the head pressed against the upper right, a long flipper crossing left through the text. Its skin is textured with both teal scratch marks and dappled cream flecks, shaped by arching cream grooves along the throat, and surrounded by dramatic teal and cream splashes. Below, a band of jagged, deep-toned waves recedes beneath the whale, layered with smaller cream capitals repeating the main phrase.
A careful detail sits in the lower corner: a shield-shaped emblem defined by a cream border. Within, fine block capitals name the species and its behaviour—“humpback whale” and “surface behavior”—framed by slim horizontal cream lines. Larger gaps and scattered droplets remain visible, highlighting the whale’s movement and the space between forms.
