Design story & product details
Ink does something useful to water here: it stops it. On this unisex longsleeve t-shirt a glass caliper stands tall down the left side, pale blue and see-through, with white reflections running its length and small bubbles caught inside the shaft. Its two jaws have turned into breaking waves, and the flat print keeps every fleck of foam where it landed.
- The measuring tool has a knurled round knob at the top, a rectangular sliding block partway down and a capped cylinder at the foot, all drawn like blown glass.
- The upper jaw curls downward and the lower one sweeps up, both deep navy with white marbled veining and cream spray breaking off their outer edges in loose droplets.
- Between them, navy stencil capitals read Hold Still, Ocean. The first line is small, the second heavy and wide, closed with a round full stop.
The lettering has its own small jokes. The O in Ocean is a circle quartered by a cross, like a gauge dial, and the A is a solid triangle with no crossbar. The navy fill is slightly mottled, so the words look stamped by the same tool that is trying to take the sea’s measurements. It is a dry, slightly absurd request to make of a tide. It suits surfers, sailors, engineers and anyone who has tried to measure something that would not stay put.
