Design story & product details
The smallest of the three trees is barely a seedling, and its roots are the thinnest lines in the whole drawing: a few rust-orange threads feeling their way into the splintered end of a fallen trunk. Follow the log back down and the trees get older. The middle one has forked its roots over the bark like fingers, and the tallest has sent a pale root right around the curve of the wood, long enough to reach the underside.
What they are standing on is a dead tree, drawn lying at a slant with its broken tip raised and its root mass torn out of the ground at the other end. On a hoodie the artwork reads as one heavy diagonal, densest at the base, where cream and tan roots tangle over orange wood and dark green shadow before thinning into dozens of fine hanging tips. The bark is patched with scalloped grey-green lichen, and the boughs are dark forest green with sage laid over the top, so each branch looks lit from above.
- The palette stays within rust orange, brown, cream, sage and deep green.
- The break at the top of the log shows pale raw wood in long jagged splinters.
- Each conifer has its own trunk in the same orange as the roots below it.
It suits hikers, foresters and anyone who stops on a trail to see what is growing on a rotting log.
