Design story & product details
The plainest part of the drawing is the outer lip. Where the other surfaces of the shell are worked over with hatching, this broad flare is left almost bare cream, with only a few rubbed patches of sandy tan and a wavy, scalloped rim.
That restraint is what makes the mouth read so deep. The opening is a dark navy oval, and curved strokes ring it one inside another, thinning and paling as they climb toward the rim, so the shell seems to have been turned to face you, mouth first. On this unisex longsleeve t-shirt the whelk runs on a diagonal, its pointed spire up at the left and its narrow canal tapering to a fine tip at the lower right.
The spire is the busy end. Its ribbed whorls are crowded with small round barnacle-like bumps, and among them are three or four pitted holes, the kind a shell picks up after a long time on the seabed. Slate-blue stippling fills the grooves, and a thin navy line holds the whole outline together.
It is drawn the way an old natural history plate would be, in navy, slate, cream and tan. It suits beachcombers, divers and anyone who keeps a shell on the windowsill, and it makes an easy gift for a friend who lives by the coast.
