Description
A monochrome engraving-style illustration spans the front of the unisex longsleeve, drawing its title and text from the artwork itself: ‘Shelter For Roses’. The central figure is a kneeling statue rendered in dense crosshatching, with her bowed head and robe-covered arms sheltering a rosebush from winter’s cold. The snow-dusted branches at either side are deftly sketched, and the stone plinth beneath features acanthus and scrollwork ornament that mimics the engraved banners and flourished capitals framing the scene.
The topmost ‘SHELTER’ arches heavily in layered serif letters, each stroke detailed with subtle highlights and outlines for a carved, weighted presence. ‘FOR ROSES’ fans left and right around the figure’s head, the R and S drawn with elaborate terminals. At the bottom, a broad banner spells out ‘THE GARDEN AFTER FROST’ above a finer ‘WINTER STUDY’ label, each line locked in by ornamental stone motifs. The open grey ground extends just to the margins of the main image and figure, allowing brisk air around the composition’s denser detailing.
