Description
Fine-lined feather barbs emerge in close formation, every edge lightly dusted with gold across the layered gray-black wings. Each feather’s pointed tip is bounded by a precise black stroke, and the upper pair of wings arch high to meet a cluster of ornate gothic letters. ARCHED in blackletter style, ‘SHELTER’ is followed by smaller ‘IN THE’ and the matching ‘WINGS’, their heavy strokes and gold tapers edged with finials and careful cross-like accents.
Small gold four-pointed stars and curling thorned vines are set off to the sides, tracing the angles and negative space between outstretched feathers and type. A close look at the banner set low among the curved wing tips finds a gold-ruled rectangle with serif capitals reading ‘A PLACE TO REST’—gold cross ornaments finish each end. The wings overlap and sweep inward below, leaving the very center and base free of marks or text, a clear field on the piece’s front.
The entire scene runs as a wrap around the surface of the 11oz ceramic mug, following its curve and leaving a band of unprinted space at the bottom near the handle. All words on the artwork are English, set out in gothic and serif forms.
