The two words embroidered in notably thick, rounded sans-serif fill almost the full width of this low-profile dad hat. Each letter is strict in its width and line weight, giving them a heavy and balanced presence against the open background. At first the baseline appears straight, but careful attention shows a slight rising arch across the phrase, an effect further emphasized as the tightly set letters press together—especially clear with the ‘o’ and ‘c’, whose curved forms crowd each other more than the upright lines found in ‘l’ or ‘m’.
No outline breaks the color, and the single light fill keeps focus on the composition of the text. ‘Sol commun’ is French, meaning ‘common sun.’ The embroidery has a deliberate, almost typographic closeness in the letterspacing that marks it out by feel and not just in form.
